Job Description:

Posting Summary As the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics ( DAFRE ) expands its offerings with the new Agricultural Business and Food Systems ( ABFS ) major, there is a critical need to enhance both student engagement and co-curricular learning opportunities. The ABFS program is a collaborative effort with the Departments of Human Ecology and Family and Community Health Sciences, combining a strong natural and social scientific foundation with business skills and preparing students to address the challenges of modern agriculture, food systems, and food security. DAFRE’s long-standing reputation for developing strong analytical, business, and data skills will continue to be a hallmark of the ABFS program. However, DAFRE faces a significant gap in teaching resources, exacerbated by the loss of teaching staff and loss in revenue potential from a dormant 5-year B.S. M.S. Food and Business Economics (M.Sc.) Program. As ABFS grows and the M.Sc. program is revived, additional teaching support is urgently needed. The proposed Non-Tenure Track ( NTT ) Assistant Teaching Professor position will play a pivotal role in filling this gap with the expectation that they will become Undergraduate Program Director ( UPD ) for ABFS , teach key courses, and create new co-curricular and experiential learning opportunities for students. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty position. The expected starting date is September 1st, 2025. In the first year, the position will teach foundational courses and guest lectures in food systems, agribusiness, business finance, innovation and entrepreneurship, or related topics as aligned with expertise and departmental teaching needs. As UPD , the position will also provide crucial academic advising and support student retention and recruitment. In subsequent years, the role will expand to include teaching an ABFS supply chain management course and the ABFS capstone course, coordinating and mentoring experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates, mentoring faculty on externship programs, and contributing to an Office of Continuing and Professional Education ( OCPE ) short course on farm business management for new farmers. This position directly aligns with DAFRE’s strategic priorities, especially our existing area of strength in data analytics. It will support the department’s mission to integrate teaching, research, and outreach in this thematic area. The successful candidate will focus on student experience and community engagement by supporting student engagement, thereby enhancing the impact of both the ABFS and the Environmental and Business Economics ( EBE ), which is DAFRE’s undergraduate program. Major Responsibilities The position is expected to teach undergraduate courses and provide guest lectures in food systems, agribusiness, business finance, innovation and entrepreneurship, and related fields. Expected to develop a new course on supply chain management as well as a capstone course to support the ABFS major curriculum, as recommended by the ABFS curriculum design committee and departmental mini retreats. Further instructional support for the M.Sc. curriculum may be required. As Undergraduate Program Director for ABFS : serve as program advisor to prospective and admitted students (including first-year and transfer students); represent ABFS at student recruiting events and transfer advising days, develop student retention activities and programs, and ensure students have clear paths and support to graduation (as aligned with the Office of Academic Programs); conduct administrative processes such as major declaration approvals and pre-senior reviews; prepare and submit annual program assessments to the Dean of Academic Programs; support undergraduate experiential learning opportunities; and serve on the Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee ( CEP ) and other committees as required. Position works with personnel and resources within the department and the school as needed. Help with the financial management component of the OCPE farm business management short course for new farmers. Serve as faculty coordinator and mentor for undergraduate experiential learning opportunities, as well as externship programs such as I-Corps . Overview The Department: The Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics, a research and teaching unit of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, is located on the scenic G. H. Cook Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The department is housed in the Cook Office Building.
